THE ARAB MINISTERIAL COUNCIL OF ELECTRICITY DECIDES TO CREATE THE FIRST ARAB COMMON MARKET

Mr. Aziz RABBAH, Minister of Energy, Mines and Environment took part in the work of the extraordinary session of the Arab Ministerial Council for Electricity, which was held by vision conference on Monday, July 27, 2020, in the presence of the Arab Ministers of Energy and Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the Arab League.

This meeting focused on a single issue, namely the governance of the Common Arab Electricity Market.

Thus, the Council approved the final amended version of the two conventions (the general convention and the convention of the Arab Common Market for Electricity). In addition, it called on Arab member states for internal coordination among the competent national authorities in order to ratify the governance documents at the level of each country before the end of 2020, with a view to presenting them by the Council secretariat to the other specialized ministerial councils in early 2021, in order to start the procedures for activating the Arab Common Electricity Market.

It should be noted that the implementation of the convention of the common Arab market aims at achieving energy integration at the level of Arab countries and establishing the basis for the exchange and trade of electrical energy, which will have a significant impact on the economic, social and environmental levels, such as the development of the renewable electricity sector and the creation of new jobs in Arab countries.
